It was a day like many others for Leslie Stalder. With four active children, she decided, after running afternoon errands, to stop at the local Wendy’s drive-thru to get something to eat. Leslie began to quickly grab a bite of food herself before leaving the parking lot.
This is when things turned very serious, the bite of food got stuck in Leslie’s throat. Leslie wasn’t frightened, at first. However, within seconds, she couldn’t breathe – and Leslie knew if she didn’t receive immediate help, she would be in serious trouble. She jumped quickly out of her driver’s seat and pointed to her 11-year-old son Isaac and then to her throat. Without hesitation, Isaac hopped over the back seat, put his arms around his mother and performed the Heimlich Maneuver, not once, but four times. Finally the food was dislodged and Leslie could breathe again. What makes this story so exceptional is that just a few weeks earlier, 11-year-old Isaac was at his local Boy Scout meeting where his leader was teaching about what to do when a person was choking. It was during this class where Isaac, who was carefully listening, learned the technique that later saved his mother’s life. As Leslie Stalder recounts the events on this memorable day in July, 2009, she reflects on what might have been, “I had three younger children in the car who wouldn’t have known what to do had Isaac not been in the car. Isaac has learned so many things at Boy Scouts. I’m so thankful that Boy Scouts taught him something that ended up saving my life!” Isaac’s story is just one of many. Everyday, young people around Arizona, are learning character building skills that help them in all the activities of their lives. Click here to help more kids learn valuable skills | | | | |
